Welcome to the Belize Glessima Research website !! This website carries well researched articles, papers, thesis resulting from primary and secondary research techniques on topical areas of socio-political and socio-cultural concerns about Belize and Belizeans. It is the initiative of Mrs. Myrtle Palacio, a Belizean of Garifuna and Creole descent. Mrs. Palacio has contributed several publications and papers to the socio-cultural and socio-political dialogue on Belize. Between 1998 and 2000 she maintained a column in the Amandala Newspaper entitled “Kom Een Da Me Mek Ahm”.
The name “Glessima” is synonymous with concepts such as, productive, assertive, commitment, independent, as these characterized the woman so christened in the early 1900’s. “Glessima” first resurfaced in 1985 designated as a business entity owned by Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Myrtle Palacio and operated by Mrs. Myrtle Palacio. Glessima Research and Services Ltd. was built on a strong social commitment, performing not only for profit, but subsidized skills training for youth and women at risk, and disseminated the results of many socio/cultural surveys through national and international public fora. Glessima Research and Services Ltd. among other ingenuities, pioneered the computer industry and initiated the political polling culture in Belize.
Belize is geographically located in the Circum-Caribbean region, and is approximately 10,000 square miles in size. Its boundary on the east is the Caribbean Sea, west and south is Guatemala and on the north is Mexico. Belize attained political independence in September 1981, and its ethnically diverse population totals approximately 315,000 (2008). Two major political parties dominate electioneering and to date all attempts of emerging third parties and independent candidates have been unsuccessful. Tourism is emerging as the number one export earner closely followed by agriculture, with primary exports being seafood, sugar and banana.
